MFT660P Use of Self in Marriage and Family Therapy (1 cr.)

Prerequisite(s): MFT605 MFT620  

Pre/Co-requisite: MFT615  
This course explores how and where the interface of the self of the therapist impacts therapeutic work with individuals, couples, and families. The personal and professional development of the therapist is the focus. Issues addressed include self-awareness, self-care, transference/counter transference, and integration of self into the theory and practice of marriage and family therapy.

Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to do the following:

  1. Assess their strengths, areas of growth, and resources both professionally and personally.
  2. Develop strategies and implement practices of self-care.
  3. Understand the complexity and the relationship of the self and the other within the context of the therapeutic relationship.
  4. Accessing their voice within the therapeutic relationship
  5. Develop key therapeutic skills including joining, present-mindedness, and accessing client’s strengths.
  6. Identify and apply the common therapeutic factors in marriage and family therapy.
  7. Develop and assess the literature regarding use of self in therapy.
