RA556 Spatial Data Methodology (2 cr.) This is a field and laboratory course which introduces methods basic to the collection of data in a manner suitable for spatial analysis. Topics include basic plane table, total station and topographic surveying, use of global positioning systems (GPS), and preparation of data for conversion to a digital format.
Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to do the following:
- Understand and create and effectively utilize maps and figures.
- Appreciate the importance of ‘ground control’ and can effectively capture, utilize, and automate data.
- Gather user requirements and interpreting them into technical specifications.
- Understand and prepare himself/herself for certification.
- Develop confidence with respect to understanding and using sophisticated position control instrumentation such as GPS and total station technologies.
- Become competent in registering field data and then importing it into a GIS.
