MFT660AK Theories of Non-Directive Play Therapy (2 cr.)

Prerequisite(s): MFT605 MFT620  

Pre/Co-requisite: MFT615  
This course focuses on the major non-directive play therapy theories and models. A history of non-directive play therapy and its relationship to mental health fields are examined. In addition, how play therapy relates to principles, assessment, and diagnosis within psychology and family therapy is explored.

Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to do the following:

  1. Compare and contrast the major non-directive play therapy theories.
  2. Communicate in professionally appropriate language about play therapy approaches and implications.
  3. Analyze the ethical implications of using play therapy with vulnerable populations.
  4. Relate the historical development of play therapy to the assessment and treatment of diverse populations.
  5. Evaluate play therapy theory and research.
