Live with Impact serves as an anchor for the First Year Learning Experience by welcoming you into the Saint Mary’s University community and providing an opportunity for the development of academic skills in the areas of Leadership Communication, Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Vocation. The goal of the curriculum is to uncover your desire or calling to make a difference in the world through innovating existing ministry, understanding the Lasallian vocation, leadership structures, social enterprises, or nonprofit opportunities. Ultimately, you will be encouraged to develop approaches to your own careers through cultivating of a sense of where your own vocation connects with the needs of your communities.
Inquiry into these areas will allow you to develop the academic habits and ways of thinking to take forward into any Interdisciplinary Minor of your choice. This course incorporates the common themes of Place, Purpose, and Well Being by developing academic skills and attitudes necessary to think critically about intellectual flexibility, identity development, community engagement, social responsibility, and the search for meaning. Through the lens of the communication process, topics include: creativity, methods of problem solving, being innovative, identifying the relation between individual talents and career choices, leading for change, and personal moral development. This class will use leadership theories, topics, cultural and art experiences, and case studies to examine “identity.” Students will be given a practical introduction to link their talents to their academic and professional choices. Specific areas to be examined include (but are not limited to): personal skills assessments, leadership styles, design thinking and vocational passion.
