MPY711 Practicum II (3 cr.)Prerequisite(s): MPY710 Within this practicum/internship/field experience, students work in a counseling or mental health setting under the supervision of a mental health professional throughout the semester for a minimum of 350 total hours. Forty percent of all accrued hours must be considered direct client hours. All students receive direct supervision from an onsite approved supervisor. A practicum seminar course is taken concurrently as part of the practicum requirements. The seminar course provides an environment for discussion of multiple topics including case conceptualization and consultation as well as the ongoing use and process of supervision. Personal and professional issues relevant to the practicum experience are examined.
Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to do the following:
- Integrate knowledge of counseling theories, assessment, research, and ethics into the practice of psychological services.
- Elicit and integrate feedback from practicum site supervisor, practicum faculty, and peers regarding diagnosis, treatment planning, and therapeutic skills and interventions.
- Apply effective, proactive communication and demonstrate professional and ethical conduct.
- Identify gaps in knowledge and abilities and work to build competencies.
- Demonstrate self awareness and practice cultural humility with clients and colleagues.
- Articulate importance of, and plan for, ongoing supervision and consultation throughout professional practice
