MPY601 Social, Cognitive, and Affective Bases of Behavior (2 cr.)Prerequisite(s): Pre/CoRequisite MPY600 This course provides an introduction to, and overview of, the basic principles and theories on the cognitive, affective, and social bases of human behavior. The course examines current and evolving academic research in these subdisciplines of psychology. Students will learn how human behavior is shaped by social context, cognition, affect, and their intersection.
- Describe key aspects of cognition, including sensation and perception, attention, learning, memory, language, decision-making, and executive functioning.
- Identify key aspects of emotion including differentiation of emotion, affect, mood and temperament, and mechanisms of emotion regulation.
- Analyze how social aspects of interpersonal and group dynamics affect cognitive attributions, discrimination, bias, attitudes, and behaviors
- Evaluate major theories, principles, and research methods used to study emotion, cognition and social psychology
