MPY606 Psychophysiology (3 cr.)Prerequisite(s): MPY 605 , MPY 608 This course examines the basic anatomy and physiological functions of the brain. An introduction to how brain structures, the central nervous system, neurotransmitters, and hormones contribute to behavior, cognition, and affect will be reviewed. Additionally, the course will focus on how biological mechanisms and physiological processes may affect or contribute to mental health related symptoms and disorders as evidenced by current research. The mind-body relationship and implications for mental health diagnosis and treatment will also be discussed.
Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to do the following:
- Identify the basic anatomy and physiology of the brain and the nervous system.
- Describe potential biological mechanisms and physiological processes that may affect or contribute to behavior, affect, symptom presentation, and/or mental health disorders
- Apply evidence based knowledge of brain structures, functions, and physiology to inform diagnosis and treatment interventions.
- Explain biological basis of selected psychological disorders
