EDS727 Principal as Building Leader (3 cr.)

Prerequisite(s): All core courses should be completed at the time of enrollment
This course examines the role of the principal as an instructional leader who can formally supervise and evaluate staff, build effective teams, shape a vision of success for all students, cultivate leadership in others, communicate effectively, use data to foster school improvement, and facilitate a strong culture of caring among students and staff.  Organizational structures related to the principal’s role in providing oversight for special education programs are also examined, as well as the role of the principal to ensure a safe and secure environment that meets state mandates.  Overall, the goal of being a principal who utilizes practical wisdom is the main focus.

 

Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to do the following:

  1. Evaluate school safety and security policies, plans, and procedures to determine their potential effectiveness in keeping the school community safe, as well as for adherence with state mandates consistent with the values of a flourishing school.

  2. Define principal accountability for programs designed and implemented to meet the individual needs of students, including Special Education, 504 Plans, and Intervention programs so they are executed with both a legal and an ethical lens so that each child has equal opportunity to achieve.

  3. Analyze a variety of data to create an improvement plan that incorporates evidence-based practices for teaching, learning,  assessment, and school culture that guides the school in meeting its goal of being a flourishing school community.

  4. Create a method for including and communicating with stakeholders in the development and implementation of the school improvement plan so that  the journey of achieving its school mission as a flourishing school community continues.

  5. Analyze the elements of change and identify leadership traits and skills  that are beneficial in supporting  stakeholders through the process of change.
