GN125 Math in the Real World (3 cr.) This course introduces practical mathematical reasoning for everyday life and civic decision-making. Students learn to model trade-offs, interpret and visualize real data, estimate risk, make fair comparisons, and apply budgeting and investment math. Emphasis is placed on testing claims encountered via current events and communicating results clearly. Students also build career-ready skills such as critical thinking, teamwork, and effective use of technology.
Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to do the following:
- Identify real-world problems using mathematical representations and select appropriate models to interpret and evaluate.
- Assess quantitative claims to distinguish fact, estimation, and opinion.
- Estimate, interpret and analyze quantitative information that supports informed personal and civic decisions that impact daily life and community well-being.
- Leverage technology to collect, organize, and visualize data and effectively communicate results.
- Use ethical data practices and fairness principles to evaluate impacts and propose equity-focused solutions.
