English for Business Professions Minor

English prepares students for careers in business, law, and other professional and technical fields by developing skills that are critical to career advancement and success beyond the entry-level job:

  • Written communication
  • Oral communication
  • Rhetorical awareness
  • Critical thinking and analytical ability
  • Research and information literacy
  • Cultural sensitivity
  • Collaborative and creative strategies
  • Professionalization and self-presentation

Objectives:

Objective 1. Deriving Meaning from a Text The program will develop students’ ability to derive meaning from a text.

Objective 2. Cultural Sensitivity The program will develop students’ understanding of how cultural context relates to the production and reception of texts.

Objective 3. Advancing and Defending a Thesis The program will develop students’ ability to advance a thesis or defend a position with evidence from primary and secondary source materials.

Objective 4. Effective Writing The program will develop students’ ability to write effectively in a variety of genres and styles.

Objective 5. Disposition and professional demeanor The program will develop in students a disposition and demeanor reflecting the department and university mission through respect, intellectual flexibility, attention to detail, and cultural sensitivity.
