Human Resource Management, B.S.

Program Description

The goal of the Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management program is to prepare individuals with the human resource management skills required to work effectively at a professional level in continually changing organizational environments. The program’s focus is providing the knowledge base needed for success in a variety of human resource careers. The program also focuses on the development of skill sets needed by human resource professionals with an emphasis on becoming valued partners within organizations.

Program Outcomes

Graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management program are expected to be able to do the following:

  1. Develop human resource management initiatives aligned with organizational strategy.
  2. Demonstrate the knowledge necessary to perform the functions of a human resource management generalist for an organization.
  3. Analyze the theories and contemporary practices utilized in employee rewards and recognition systems.
  4. Assess various human resource initiatives to improve employee engagement.
  5. Examine training and development strategies focusing on performance improvement and organizational development. 
  6. Display cultural competence and analyze its role in human resource management.
  7. Communicate effectively with diverse audiences in a variety of modes.
  8. Incorporate an ethical and legal perspective into one’s work environment.
  9. Explore the dynamics of employer and employee work relationships, from both a union and non-union perspective.
  10. Demonstrate fundamental business administration skills needed by organizational leaders.

Program Structure and Delivery

Most courses in the program are delivered in an accelerated format. Courses are delivered both fully online, as well as either on-ground or blended-delivery. Blended-delivery courses incorporate both on-ground and online activities.

Degree Requirements


A minimum of 120 credits is required for graduation with a bachelor of science degree from Saint Mary’s University. All students must meet the general education credit requirements. A minimum of 36 credits is needed to complete the B.S. in Human Resource Management.

Required Human Resource Management Courses 15 cr.
Required Business and Management Courses 9 cr.
Required Communication Courses 6 cr.
Elective Courses 3 cr.
Required Capstone Course 3 cr.
Total 36 cr.

 

Elective Courses: 3 cr.


Students may select any 300 or 400 level business or management course as an elective. Course information may be found at Business Administration, B.S.  and Managed Share Core, (Bachelors) .

Students who anticipate enrolling in a graduate program at Saint Mary’s University may take a graduate course for the Human Resource Management core program elective course requirement. The graduate course may be applied toward both the Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management and the graduate program requirements if a grade of B or higher is earned in the course. Registration for the graduate course must be approved by the program director, and the graduate course must be completed within the final 12 credits of the bachelor’s degree program.

Required Capstone Course: 3 cr.


BU490 is a blended course, integrating face-to-face classroom meetings and online activities or interactions in a planned, instructionally valuable manner. MG495 is a fully online course.

Bachelor’s to Graduate Bridge Pathways


Bachelor’s completion degrees can be bridged to Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota graduate programs and certificates by combining advanced undergraduate coursework with graduate-level coursework. Depending on which programs are part of the pathway bridge, bachelor’s completion students may take up to 50% of the required graduate coursework for a graduate degree or 100% of the coursework for a graduate certificate. The graduate courses count toward the completion of both the bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree or certificate. Acceptance to the graduate program requires a separate application through admission.  Please see admissions for program specific admission policies.

Students in the B.S. in Human Resource Management program are eligible to take the following M.A. in Human Resource Management program graduate level courses to replace B.S. in Human Resource Management core program coursework:

Students who are interested in enrolling in graduate certificates or programs other than the M.A. in Human Resource Management program also have the option to complete graduate courses as part of the graduate bridge pathway. Faculty


The faculty members for this program have earned doctorate or master’s degrees. Faculty are selected for their combination of educational and professional experience and expertise.

Admission Requirements


Applicants may apply for admission to undergraduate certificate and degree programs at any time during the year and, if accepted, begin the program during any one of the three semesters. Applicants must demonstrate the language proficiency necessary for successful undergraduate coursework. Applicants must provide evidence of at least 30 transferable semester credits upon acceptance, including completion of a basic English composition course. Applicants may complete an interview with a program administrator as part of the admission process.

Application Process


  1. Completed application form with the nonrefundable application fee (fee not required for alumni or students seeking readmission or veterans and active military personnel and their immediate family).
  2. All official transcripts issued to Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota from all previous institutions attended with a minimum of 30 transferable semester credits with a Basic English composition course.  (An official transcript is one that is sent to the university by the credit-granting institution. Transcripts from countries other than the U.S. must be evaluated on a course by course basis by a university accepted evaluation service, such as World Education Services, Educational Credential Evaluators, Educational Perspectives, or One Earth International Credential Evaluators and be deemed equivalent to accredited U.S. university standards).  Evaluations from an approved member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES.org) will also be accepted.
