MFT660N Medical Family Therapy (1 cr.)

Prerequisite(s): MFT605 MFT620  

Pre/Co-requisite: MFT615  
This course introduces the student to the interface between family therapy and the healthcare delivery system. A wide variety of settings in which family therapists and health care providers interact are explored. The benefits and challenges of such collaborations are discussed in terms of patient care. Specific tools for successful collaboration are presented.

Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to do the following:

  1. Identify and describe the various levels of collaborative care settings in which health care providers and marriage & family therapists may interact.
  2. Describe the benefits of collaboration between health care providers and marriage & family therapists, including but not limited to benefits to patients, family members, health care providers, and the larger community.
  3. Describe the challenges of collaboration between health care providers and marriage & family therapists, including but not limited to issues of power differentials and boundaries, pragmatics/logistics, and different theoretical perspectives on patient care.
  4. Analyze medical family therapy case material.
  5. Present case material incorporating relevant terminology and formats.
