MFT660X Working with Later Life Families: Aging from a Family Perspective (1 cr.)

Prerequisite(s): MFT605 MFT620  

Pre/Co-requisite: MFT615  
 This course studies the intersection of family and gerontology. Intragenerational and intergenerational family relationship lenses are used to create a realistic and practical view of elders and their family systems.

Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to do the following:

  1. Identify common myths and facts about aging and family ties.
  2. Describe common decision-making issues and transitions facing later life families.
  3. Explain intergenerational family relationships issues.
  4. Explain intragenerational family relationships issues.
  5. Describe potential limitations of later life families, including potential sources of conflict.
  6. Apply life-course theory and family genograms to understanding later life families.
