PHDE627 Cross-Cultural Philanthropy (2 cr.)


This course focuses on understanding the distinctive dimensions of giving and volunteering within the diverse cultural groups that increasingly define philanthropic markets. Specific attention is given to the development of cross-cultural competence and its application to philanthropy and development.

Upon completion of the course, students are expected to be able to do the following:

  1. Evaluate and deconstruct culture assumptions about philanthropy.
  2. Evaluate and apply a cultural competency model to philanthropy.
  3. Formulate ethical and market-based rationales to advance cross-cultural philanthropic strategies in a nonprofit organization.
  4. Apply cross-cultural philanthropic competencies across various types of nonprofit organizations as well as ethnic and other demographic groups.
  5. Develop a framework of practice that consciously applies diversity principles.
  6. Demonstrate an understanding, sensitivity and appreciation of differences in diversity.
  7. Develop plans to deepen cross-cultural competency throughout the career cycle.
