RA642 Database - Access and SQL (2 cr.)

Prerequisite(s): RA554 ,RA660 
This course introduces to the core functionalities of the personal DBMS encapsulated in Microsoft Access as well as the enterprise database management system exemplified by SQL interface communications. Additionally, students learn basic tenants of database development, table creation, and the concepts of database ‘normalization’. SQL query development with ESRI ArcSDE is also imbedded in the course.

Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to do the following:

  1. Demonstrate proficiency and differentiates between the different advantages/disadvantages of various GIS platforms
  2. Apply knowledge of principles, theories, and concepts of spatial data analysis
  3. Understand basic and advanced GIS analysis techniques
  4. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of database terminology, design techniques, and data issues
  5. Be able to efficiently collect, format, manage, and implement both spatial and non-spatial data within a GIS
  6. Design and develop Esri geodatabases
  7. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of relational database management systems such as SQL Server and ArcSDE
  8. Use basic standard query language to manage and query databases.
