MG312 Environmental Economics (3 cr.)


This course introduces students to environmental resources, economic efficiency, and market failures in the context of environmental policy.  Analytical methods of evaluating the economic impact of environmental policies and the economic causes of environmental problems will be addressed.  This course also explores the political economy of environmental downgrading and environmental protection.

Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to do the following:

  1. Identify the economic causes of environmental problems.
  2. Evaluate the effects of positive and negative externalities in the allocation of environmental resources.
  3. Explain attributes of the range of policy instruments available to correct for negative outcomes.
  4. Describe the total economic value of environmental resources, including the methods of valuation.
  5. Explain the tools for analyzing the benefits and costs of environmental policies.
  6. Identify the economic implications of climate change.
