ESL690 Researching Critical Issues in English Language Learning: Paper and Presentation (3 cr.)

Prerequisite(s): ESL600 ESL601 , ESL602 ESL603 ESL605 ESL606 ESL607 ESL608 , ESL620  
In this course ESL master’s degree candidates integrate their knowledge of current practices and policies related to the education of English language learners. This course involves continued instruction on the fundamentals of ESL research-writing and further exploration of the student’s individual research topic. Candidates choose a topic of interest to research in depth, developing a full-length 3-chapter thesis proposal which they will deliver and defend in an oral presentation.

Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to do the following:

  1. Synthesize current policies regarding services to English learners with knowledge of past and current trends.
  2. Develop research questions or hypotheses related to policies that impact English learners.
  3. Write a literature review investigating a particular ESL topic.
  4. Use APA style correctly.
  5. Organize an academic research paper.
  6. Investigate a particular ESL-related topic, using appropriate research methodology and data collection techniques.
  7. Produce a final draft of a 3-chapter academic thesis proposal.
  8. Present and defend thesis proposal.
