PY735 Trauma and Crisis Counseling (3 cr.)

Prerequisite(s): PY613  
This course reviews crisis response and trauma-informed care. Students identify possible presentations of crisis and/or trauma responses and explore respectful approaches for engaging and supporting clients. Diagnostic considerations, assessment, and specific models for treatment and healing, as well as their training requirements, are reviewed. Similarities and differences between trauma and crisis presentations and treatment approaches are covered.

Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to do the following:

  1. Identify crisis and trauma issues presented by therapy clients and articulate factors related to determining if, when, and how to address these concerns with the client.
  2. Articulate similarities and differences between the concepts of trauma and crisis and their treatment.
  3. Compare and contrast various modalities for trauma care with consideration for client’s concerns, strengths and resiliencies.
  4. Identify treatment strategies for crisis counseling including assessing for risk and creating safety plans, if indicated.
