PYD821 Advanced Cognitive-Behavioral Theories and Techniques (3 cr.)Prerequisite(s): PYD820 This course examines theories and techniques of Cognitive Behavioral approaches as applied in professional counseling. Students will learn the general framework of Cognitive Behavioral Theory and gain familiarity with specific empirically supported techniques and treatments. Additionally, emphasis is placed on determining when to offer Cognitive Behavioral therapies in general, what specific treatments to utilize depending on client presentation and preference, and when other modalities are more appropriate.
Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to do the following:
- Explain the underlying principles of cognitive behavioral theory.
- Evaluate and apply research in the area of cognitive behavioral approaches.
- Plan strategies to establish and maintain effective relationships with clients when utilizing cognitive behavioral approaches.
- Apply cognitive behavioral techniques in therapy and identify when utilization of the approach is most appropriate.
- Integrate an understanding of diversity into the application of cognitive behavioral approaches with individual clients.
- Evaluate ethical implications when employing cognitive behavioral approaches, from the perspective of a professional psychologist.
