PY721 Career Counseling (3 cr.)Prerequisite(s): PY613 This course provides a comprehensive overview of the history and theories of career development. The relationship between an individual and their work/career is explored in the context of vocational theories. The course includes an introduction to assessment tools and techniques commonly used in career counseling and industrial organizational psychology. Techniques for assessing and evaluating interrelationships of life roles, lifestyle, culture, and values are reviewed and practiced.
Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to do the following:
- Examine the major theories of vocational development.
- Apply career counseling theories to specific client situations.
- Evaluate the quality and limitation of resources/assessments that are available to counselors and their clients, including labor market resources, technology, and computer-based career information systems.
- Discern appropriate assessments based on client needs.
- Integrate information about a person and their environment, including roles, family, culture, lifestyle, and how these contribute to career development.
- Guide an individual through the decision making and implementation process regarding career/vocational choices.
- Identify ethical and cultural implications and considerations when working with others in career development.
