APSY300 General Psychology (3 cr.) This course provides a broad survey of the major topics and issues in contemporary psychology. Students receive an overview of the major psychological theories and the principal contributors to the discipline. Students are also introduced to the following topics: psychological research, biological bases of behavior, multicultural psychology, personality, perception, learning, cognition, emotion, motivation, individual development, psychological disorders, methods of treatment, and social psychology.
Upon completion of the course, students are expected to be able to do the following:
- Identify and explain major theories in contemporary psychology.
- Identify significant contributors to contemporary psychology and describe their contributions to the field.
- Describe the various branches of contemporary psychology.
- Explain significant psychological concepts and how these concepts enhance understanding of human experience and behavior.
- Explain the process of planning and implementing a psychological research study.
- Evaluate psychological information presented in mainstream media.
