MPY719 Group Counseling (3 cr.)Prerequisite(s): MPY 613 This course covers the history and practice of group counseling/therapy grounded in social psychology. Methods and basic skills are practiced to encourage the development of effective group leadership skills. Common problems related to the composition and process of an effective group are examined.
Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to do the following:
- Evaluate when to implement groups as an intervention with different populations, across settings.
- Explain major theories of group counseling and group work.
- Describe characteristics of effective group members and leaders.
- Critique group process, development, content, and dynamics.
- Apply therapeutic skills in assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation for group work.
- Incorporate professional ethics and multicultural considerations in determining appropriate group interventions.
- Apply research evidence and standards of practice in selecting and evaluating group processes.
- Analyze the therapeutic factors attributed to the group therapy process.
