MPY613 Counseling Theory and Technique (3 cr.)Prerequisite(s): Prerequisite or corequisite(s): MPY 600 , MPY 605 , MPY 608 Major approaches and theories (historical and contemporary) of personality, counseling, and psychotherapy are analyzed with an emphasis on application. Professional psychological writing style is practiced in this course.
Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to do the following:
- Compare and contrast the major theoretical approaches to counseling.
- Relate the major personality and counseling theories to the conceptualization of the client, diagnosis, and the counseling process.
- Evaluate the various therapeutic skills associated with different therapy approaches.
- Recognize basic ethical issues within the counseling relationship.
- Integrate one’s personal viewpoints and values with established theories and approaches.
- Analyze the cultural implications of modern psychotherapy and apply an awareness and appreciation of diversity to counseling.
- Integrate theory, research evidence, community standards of practice, and client needs, abilities, and culture in selecting an approach to therapy and treatment interventions.
- Implement professional psychological writing style.
