Elementary Focus 42-51 credits

Secondary Focus 36-45 credits

The Catholic education major at Saint Mary’s University prepares students to become confident and capable teachers, uniquely prepared to serve in a variety of Catholic education contexts through training of the intellectual mind, developing the philosophical capacity for reason in dialogue with faith, and practicing ethical reflection. Students will be provided opportunities for the development of personal affect and virtue-based leadership.  They will be equipped to implement knowledge of human development, research-based education methods, and skills in planning and assessment.  All of this will be done within the context of truth as connected and deepened across disciplines. This major will not satisfy requirements for state teacher licensure.

Statement pertaining to students double majoring in Catholic Education and an education major leading to state licensure at St. Mary’s University: Elementary and Secondary level double majors will complete student teaching from the licensure program in a Catholic school setting, and will concurrently complete 3 credits of ED494, Catholic Teaching Internship, during which they will complete core program components.  Secondary level double majors only will be exempted from ED372, Secondary Instructional Methods.
