E178 Gothic Literature3 credit(s) This course is designed to acquaint students with popular works of gothic literature and to increase students’ appreciation of the experience of reading. Through study of some seminal texts that helped establish the modern concept of Gothic, and attention especially to contemporary ghost, monster, and other eerie books and film, students will learn to identify common conventions and themes, read texts closely and critically, and consider how the interpretation of literature contributes to a deeper understanding of language and culture. Prerequisite: E120 or E120 /E220 placement.
