MPY710 Practicum I (3 cr.)

Prerequisite(s): All required coursework with the exception of MPY 700  
Within this practicum experience, students provide counseling and/or mental health services under the guidance of a program approved site and supervisor throughout the 16 week semester. To pass the MPY710 course, students are required to achieve a minimum of 200 total hours (of which 75 hours must be direct client contact hours) towards the total 700 hour requirement. Students attend the practicum seminar course in addition to the hours they spend at their practicum site. Class meetings are not counted towards the total practicum hours required. Students work collaboratively with program faculty, staff, and site supervisors to develop and demonstrate program and professional competencies appropriate to their developmental level. MPY710 is a process oriented course that examines multiple topics including case conceptualization, consultation, use of supervision, ethical decision making, personal growth, and professional issues relevant to the practicum, site, and counselor development.

Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to do the following:

1. Integrate knowledge of counseling theories, assessment, research, and ethics into the practice of counseling and/or psychological services.
2. Elicit and integrate feedback from practicum site supervisor, practicum faculty, and peers regarding diagnosis, treatment planning, and therapeutic skills and interventions.
3. Apply effective, proactive communication and demonstrate professional and ethical conduct.
4. Identify gaps in knowledge and abilities and work consistently strive to build competencies.
5. Demonstrate self awareness and practice cultural humility with clients and colleagues.
6. Articulate importance of, and plan for, ongoing supervision and consultation throughout professional practice
