PYD853 Trauma Treatments (2 cr.)

Prerequisite(s): Completion of first year coursework (24 credits), PYD821 ,PYD822 ,PYD841  
This course examines the nature of trauma, psychological responses to trauma, and the treatment of trauma. Assessment, case conceptualization, and treatment of various traumas are reviewed, including perspectives from different theoretical orientations. The course will provide space for self-reflection on practicing cultural humility and managing secondary trauma in the context of trauma therapy.

Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to do the following:

  1. Differentiate the effects of trauma and the variables that may attenuate or exacerbate posttraumatic symptoms.  
  2. Generate an understanding of complex diversity issues into assessment, case conceptualization, and treatment of trauma survivors.  
  3. Compare trauma treatment principles across different trauma therapies and theoretical orientations. 
  4. Generate strategies for deciding what trauma treatments are best suited for specific clients.
  5. Evaluate research in the area of trauma studies across disciplines and theoretical approaches.
  6. Analyze strategies to respond ethically to different situations in trauma treatment.
