PYD864 Counseling Psychology in Forensic Settings (2 cr.)Prerequisite(s): Completion of first year coursework (24 credits) This course provides an introduction to the practice of forensic psychology. The course emphasizes the standards, procedures, and relevant psycholegal issues that are considered when conducting various types of forensic evaluations. Criminal, civil, and juvenile matters are discussed. Ethical standards and considerations specific to the practice of forensic psychology are reviewed.
Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to do the following:
- Demonstrate understanding of the legal basis for the structure and role of psychologists in the judicial system.
- Examine ethical requirements and standards of practice relevant to forensic psychology.
- Examine the relationships among law, psychology, the mental health system, mental illness, and criminal conduct.
- Analyze salient issues relevant to specific types of forensic psychological evaluations.
