EDWN600 Individual Development and Effective Practice (3 cr.)


This course provides a conceptual framework for planning, instructing, and assessing student learning based on professional practices. Students will investigate theories of learning and behavior and will apply those theories in instructional design and management of student behavior. Students learn to develop and reflect on lesson plans infused with research-based teaching strategies designed to meet the needs of all learners in the classroom. Students will integrate their knowledge of state standards and effective teaching methodologies related to developmental levels, learning styles, research-based learning strategies, and assessment to develop practices that promote learner engagement and skill development for all learners.

 

Upon completion of the course, learners are expected to be able to do the following:

  1. Develop and teach a grade and content appropriate lesson plan and reflect upon how the lesson could be improved upon. (WTS #5 – Application of Content). 

  2. Develop a formative assessment tool for learning objectives that can be used to collect data and monitor student progress toward the objectives. (WTS #6 - Assessment) 

  3. Develop summative assessments and criteria for success and describe how the assessment will inform future teaching and learning. (WTS #6 – Assessment) 

  4. Develop a meaningful and innovative lesson plan segment that addresses a learning goal, content standards, lesson objectives, knowledge of students to inform teaching, instructional activities that include research -based strategies, vocabulary/academic language, and assessment. (WTS #7–Planning for Instruction) 

  5. Identify how the effects of trauma in students guide instructional planning and strategy choice-making. (WTS #4 – Content Knowledge) 

  6. Identify research based instructional strategies that can be used to engage students in deep learning of skills and content. (WTS #8 – Instructional Strategies) 

  7. Identify how IDEA and related education law impacts the role of the teacher when planning accommodations and modifications for students with disabilities. (WTS #5 – Application of Content)
