EDWN606 Individual Development (3 cr.)


This course examines the components of the reading development process from a K-12 perspective. An overview of the state requirements for teaching phonics as well as ACT 31 and American Indian history will also be provided. Community resources to help support minority students will be explored. Culturally responsive strategies for teaching and supporting minority students and students in poverty will also be explored. Research-based teaching strategies and the use of assistive technology and augmentative communication will be addressed. Lesson planning with a focus on individual student strengths and needs will also be practiced.

Upon completion of the course, learners are expected to be able to do the following:

  1. Examine key issues concerning the effects and implications of prejudice on Native American and minority students and demonstrate knowledge of available community-based resources and describe how those resources can be utilized to support and engage the school age child with disabilities.   2. Assess the impact that family involvement, poverty, culture, and nutrition have on child development and learning. (WTS #2 - Learning Differences).

  3. Utilize reading assessment techniques to diagnose reading strengths and areas for improvement and recommend appropriate instructional strategies and interventions. (WTS #1 – Pupil Development).

  4. Describe the reading development process and employ strategies to teach related skills including phonics skills. (WTS #4 - Content Knowledge).

  5. Develop a meaningful and innovative lesson plan that addresses a learning goal, content standards, lesson objectives, knowledge of students to inform teaching, instructional activities that include research-based strategies, vocabulary/ academic language, and assessment. (WTS #5- Application of Content).

  6. Effectively use and adapt instructional techniques based on knowledge of the subject matter as well as the individual to address diverse learning and behavioral needs. (WTS # 8 – Instructional Strategies).
