EDWN608 Academic and Behavior Management for the Child with Disabilities (3 cr.)


This course provides a conceptual framework for planning, instructing, and assessing student learning. Students will learn to develop and reflect on lesson plans infused with research-based teaching strategies designed to meet the needs of all students in the classroom. Students will evaluate examples of instruction and learn to assess student progress and growth in order to identify necessary adjustments to instruction, content and support. Students will understand that effective student engagement during instruction is a key strategy to managing classroom behaviors.

Upon completion of the course, learners are expected to be able to do the following:

  1. Understand and use multiple methods of assessment to engage pupils in their own growth, to monitor pupil progress and to guide the teacher’s and pupil’s decision making. (WTS #6 Assessment)

  2. Plan instruction that supports every pupil in meeting rigorous learning goals by drawing upon knowledge of content areas, curriculum, cross-disciplinary skills, pedagogy, pupils, and pupils’ communities. (WTS #7 Planning for Instruction)

  3. Understand and use a variety of instructional strategies to encourage pupils to develop a deep understanding of content areas and their connections, and to develop skills to apply knowledge in a meaningful way. (WTS #8 Instructional Strategies)

  4. Engage in ongoing professional learning and use evidence to continuously evaluate practices, including the effects of their choices and actions on pupils, their families, other educators, and the community. The ability to adapt practices to meet the needs of each pupil. (WTS #9 Professional Learning and Ethical Practice)
