MPY641 Marriage and Family Counseling (3 cr.)Prerequisite(s): Pre/CoRequisite: MPY 605 , MPY 608 This course covers couple/marriage, relational, and family therapy theories, their historical and cultural contexts, and their application to the family and couple therapy process.
Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to do the following:
- Apply understanding of the major theoretical/conceptual frameworks of relational therapy, the historical roots, key concepts, and assumptions.
- Evaluate couple, marriage, and family dilemmas using major models of couple/marriage and family therapy.
- Compare and contrast major conceptual frameworks and therapy models.
- Create and articulate one’s own developing model of marriage and family therapy.
- Apply understanding of diversity and multiculturalism in one’s own developing model of relational therapy.
- Utilize professional databases and other professional resources in applying, analyzing, and evaluating the literature of the field, including efficacy research.
- Analyze the significance of research evidence and community standards of practice in selecting and evaluating interventions and engaging in ethical practice.
