CLPY615 Multicultural Counseling (3 cr.)


In this course, students are introduced to the American Psychological Association’s multicultural guidelines and how to apply the guidelines across various settings, individuals, groups, communities, and professional roles. The course prepares according to the three core competences of multicultural counseling. Students examine the role of clinical psychology in system-level change through promotion of the common good and social justice, including their ability to function as an advocate to address social injustices that impact individuals, groups, and communities on society’s margins.  

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to do the following:

  1. Apply the core competences of multicultural counseling, self-awareness, knowledge, and skills. 
  2. Evaluate the role of social justice in their professional identity and development of systems-level interventions.
  3. Demonstrate a commitment to on-going self-reflection of personal beliefs, attitudes, strengths, biases that intersect with therapeutic relationships with diverse populations.
  4. Integrate multicultural guidelines into professional activities and roles.
