CLPY630 Psychopathology and Positive Psychology (3 cr.) This course provides an overview of current diagnostic classification systems (e.g., DSM-V-TR, 2022) with a focus on accurate diagnostic decision-making while considering various contexts, strengths, and culture of clients. Students learn to discern the range and dimensions of human functioning, from severe psychopathology to resilience, use of strengths, and meaning in life. Attention is paid to Catholic beliefs of virtue formation within the context of psychological functioning and dimensional model of personality.
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to do the following:
- Articulate the classifications and symptomatology of major psychological disorders.
- Illustrate a dimensional model of personality and psychological functioning.
- Apply a multicultural orientation to diagnostic impressions and decision-making.
- Utilize a strength-based perspective and positive psychology theories and constructs with diagnostic impressions and decision-making.
- Integrate Catholic anthropology within theories of psychopathology and personality to develop a comprehensive treatment plan for diverse clients.
