GN135 Persuasion through Visual Media (3 cr.)


This course explores how images—from photographs and graphic designs to film clips and social media—influence thoughts, feelings, and actions. Students analyze classic and contemporary examples of persuasive visual media, uncovering how form, context, and ethos shape meaning and impact on communities and society at large. Students develop career-ready competencies in critical thinking, communication, and technology through visual analysis, collaboration, and creative production.

Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to do the following:

  1. Interpret elements within visual designs to uncover how composition, color, imagery, and symbolism convey messages and aim to persuade or influence.

  2. Evaluate persuasive visual media for ethical considerations, including manipulation, bias, and representation assessing their societal impact.

  3. Analyze how cultural context shapes the reception of persuasive visuals, demonstrating critical awareness, cultural empathy, and respect for diverse perspectives.

  4. Reflect on their growth in character and career readiness through creative work, demonstrating self-discipline, resilience, ethical discernment, and practical wisdom.

  5. Design original visual media that communicates persuasive messages responsibly and ethically applying creativity to ensure clarity, honesty, and respect for audiences.

  6. Collaborate in peer critique sessions to give and receive constructive feedback presenting persuasive visual projects clearly, civilly, respectfully.
