COM311 Professional Communication and Writing (3 cr.) This course provides individuals with the theories and concepts for developing effective written and oral communication skills in diverse professional settings. The development of a variety of written, oral, and online communication skills which foster clarity, credibility, and audience engagement is emphasized. Also emphasized is the development and refinement of active listening and interpersonal communication skills to enhance collaboration and demonstrate professionalism. Students build on and refine written and oral communication skills to adapt messages across cultural, organizational, and technological contexts, cultivating both confidence and humility in communication
Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to do the following:
- Demonstrate effective written, oral, and online communication skills in professional contexts, adapting to diverse audiences and communication styles
- Apply active listening and interpersonal communication needed for facilitating effective communication.
- Develop, organize, and deliver clear, persuasive, and audience-appropriate presentations using technology, media, and graphics.
- Review existing research and articles relevant to an issue within a professional setting.
- Employ the writing process, revision, and editing strategies to compose accurate, clear, and polished professional documents using APA standards.
- Demonstrate ethical, audience-aware, and culturally sensitive communication in all professional, academic, and digital contexts.
