Healthcare Management, B.S.

Program Description

The goal of the Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management degree is to advance the skill set of individuals working in the health services industry in preparation for career mobility into management and leadership roles.

The program focuses on building skills in professional communication and collaboration, leadership and human resource management, healthcare technologies, policy, and examining health equity issues and the delivery and management of health services to diverse populations in the context of socioeconomic, political, and regulatory environments. The program prepares individuals to advance in the health services field or to continue on to graduate studies in their field.

The B.S. in Healthcare Management program prepares graduates for management and supervisory positions in a variety of healthcare settings, such as multi-specialty medical groups, health systems and hospitals, healthcare setting, device manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies, long-term care centers, home care and hospice agencies, federally qualified clinics and veterans services, nonprofit health related agencies and organizations, and more.

Program Outcomes

Graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management are expected to be able to do the following:

  1. Demonstrate awareness, respect, and adaptability for socio-cultural diversity in an ever-changing healthcare environment.
  2. Integrate effective and professional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills into daily practice.
  3. Advocate ethical behavior and decision-making and demonstrate moral leadership as a health services professional.
  4. Demonstrate management skills required in today’s workplaces.
  5. Incorporate research skills, information literacy, and data analysis into evidence-based practices.
  6. Analyze the impact and interaction between public policy issues and healthcare.
  7. Evaluate the implications and benefits of health information systems.

Program Structure and Delivery

​Courses in the program are delivered in an online format.

Degree Requirements

A minimum of 120 credits is required for graduation with a bachelor of science degree from Saint Mary’s University. All students must meet the general education credit requirements. A minimum of 36 credits is required to complete the B.S. in Healthcare Management program.

Required Core Courses 33 cr.
Required Communication Course   3 cr.
Total 36 cr.

Human Services Specialization (limited to Latin American Sisters Partnership)

A minimum of 120 credits is required for graduation with a bachelor of science degree from Saint Mary’s University. All students must meet the general education credit requirements. A minimum of 36 credits is required to complete the B.S. in Healthcare Management with Human Services Specialization program.

Required Core Courses 18 cr.
Required Communication Courses   6 cr.
Required Specialization Courses 12 cr.
Total 36 cr.

Bachelor’s to Master’s Graduate Bridge Pathways

All Bachelor’s Completion degrees can be bridged to master’s degree programs at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota by combining advanced undergraduate coursework with graduate-level coursework. Through consultation with an adviser, students may take up to 50% of the required graduate coursework for a master’s degree to meet undergraduate degree requirements.

Acceptance to the graduate program requires a separate application through admission.  Please see admissions for program specific admission policies.

Healthcare Management, B.S. to Healthcare Administration, M.A. Pathway

Students in the BS Healthcare Management degree program may take up to 12 cr. of coursework which will count towards both degree requirements. Students are eligible to take the following graduate level courses in place of bachelor coursework:

Pathways to Additional Graduate Programs

Students who anticipate enrolling in the following graduate programs: MBA, MA in Human Resource Management, MPH, MA in Healthcare Administration, MA in Organizational Leadership, or the MA in Counseling and Psychological Services graduate programs at Saint Mary’s University may take up to 6 graduate level credits which can be applied to both the degrees. The graduate course must be taken within the final 12 credits of the B.S. completion degree and the student must earn a grade of B or higher in the course.

Faculty

The faculty members for this program have earned doctorate or master’s degrees. Faculty are selected for their combination of educational and professional experience and expertise.

Admission Requirements

Applicants may apply for admission to undergraduate certificate and degree programs at any time during the year and, if accepted, begin the program during fall and spring semesters. Applicants must demonstrate the language proficiency necessary for successful undergraduate coursework.  All applicants must complete a formal reading and writing assessment consisting of a proctored and timed essay. Based on the results, an additional college writing course may be required and may be applied towards graduation requirements.  Applicants must provide evidence of at least 30 transferable semester credits upon acceptance, including completion of a basic English composition course. Applicants may complete an interview with a program administrator as part of the admission process.

Application Process

  1. A completed application form

  2. An official high school or GED transcript issued to Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. Transfer students who, following high school completion, have earned 12 or more college-level credits and at least C/2.0 or above grades are not required to submit official high school transcripts.

  3. Official transcripts from all post-high school coursework including technical and community colleges. (An official transcript is one that is sent to the university by the credit-granting institution.)
