K-12 Reading Certificate

Program Description
The K-12 Reading program prepares candidates for Minnesota K-12 Reading licensure. The program prepares graduates to develop, implement, and supervise K-12 reading curriculum in district-level positions or to coach and consult with teacher colleagues.
Program Outcomes
Consistent with the mission of Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota and the Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB) requirements for licensure as K-12 Reading, the K-12 Reading graduate certificate program expects its graduates to be able to do the following:
- Understand the foundations of reading processes and instruction.
- Employ a wide range of instructional practices, approaches, methods, and curriculum materials to support reading instruction with elementary, middle, and high school students.
- Apply a variety of assessment tools and practices to plan and evaluate effective reading instruction.
- Create a literate environment that fosters reading.
- Value professional development as a career-long effort and responsibility.
Program Structure and Delivery
The K-12 Reading program can be completed in 10 months and is designed to fit the schedule of employed persons. Courses are delivered in an online format, integrating scheduled online class sessions with online activities and interactions in a planned, instructionally valuable manner.

Teaching; MA Degree Completion
Students who have completed or are completing the Teaching, M.A. degree can complete the K-12 Reading Certificate by taking a reduced number of credits (9-12 additional K-12 Reading Certificate credits) based on the following course substitutions: Graduate courses completed in other education-based programs which are considered equivalent to K-12 Reading courses might be considered for possible course substitutions. All possible course substitutions will be reviewed and approved by the K-12 Reading Certificate program director on a case-by-case basis. Faculty
The faculty and advisers for the K-12 Reading Teacher program have earned doctorate or master’s degrees. Faculty are selected for their educational and professional experience, expertise and proven ability to teach adult students. Admission Requirements
Applicants who wish to qualify for the K-12 Reading Program must have or be eligible to hold a Tier 3 or Tier 4 Minnesota classroom teacher license. Applicants must have completed an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited institution and have maintained an overall GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale. Applicants must demonstrate the language proficiency necessary for successful graduate coursework. Application Process
Applicants must submit: - Completed application form and,
- An official transcript issued to Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota from the institution posting the applicant’s completed bachelor’s degree and other relevant transcripts documenting program prerequisites and potential transfer credits. (An official transcript is one that is sent to the university by the credit-granting institution. Transcripts from countries other than the U.S. must be evaluated on a course by course basis by a university accepted evaluation service, such as World Education Services, Educational Credential Evaluators, Educational Perspectives, or One Earth International Credential Evaluators and be deemed equivalent to accredited U.S. university standards). Evaluations from an approved member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES.org) will also be accepted.
Students with transcripts issued in the U.S. may be admitted without an official transcript. Students must provide an official transcript by the last day to add/drop classes in their first term of attendance. In cases where students are completing coursework while simultaneously applying for admission, students may be admitted with an in-progress transcript, and an official transcript posting final grades and, when appropriate, degree attainment, must be submitted before students are allowed to register for subsequent semesters. - Applicants with international transcripts may require an English language proficiency exam.
